Frequently Asked Questions about WinKey Disabler 2.0

Q: What exactly does WinKey Disabler do?

A: WinKey Disabler was written to shut off the Windows Key located on new PC keyboards. This key, located between your Ctrl and Alt keys, performs many different functions from automatically opening Windows Explorer to helping the user quickly find a file or folder on their hard drive. The downside of the Windows Key is its inherent security flaws when it comes to kiosk or public computers. For example, say you were running a demo in your office of a new PowerPoint presentation, and you had carefully trapped the presentation so no one could "Escape" out of it. All a crafty person has to do is hit the Windows Key, and up pops the Start menu! Once the start menu is visible, the user can use keyboard commands to navigate around the computer, and even disable your presentation.

Another great use for WinKey Disabler is for gamers who use the keyboard to play their high action games. Anyone who has been playing Quake II and hit the Windows Key and BANG! You're sitting on the desktop and you're getting fragged in the background. WKD stops this from happening, and lets you be the all the warrior you can be!

Q: I want to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del (Keyboard reboot) on my Windows NT system. Will WinKey do this?

A: NO. Lately We've had many requests for the ability to disable Ctrl-Alt-Del in Windows NT/2000. While we understand that some users would like to have this feature, There is simply no way to do it in the NT environment. Doing so would pose a HUGE security risk, and we simply could not allow our software to be released as a potential security hole. We apologize for this inconvenience.

Q: I'm running a kiosk computer, and don't want people shutting down my demo program. What will stop them from just turning off WinKey and wreaking havoc on my system?

A: WinKey is password protected. After installation, you can enter the properties screen of WinKey and set an admin password, and set the program to load at startup. Once you have done this, you MUST have the password in order to disable the program. WinKey will not allow you to use Ctrl-Alt-Del* either, or Alt-Tab to cycle between apps. Once you turn WinKey Disabler on, there's no way someone can reboot your computer.

Q: I'm running a game that uses DirectX and WinKey disabler doesn't work! I still get interrupted when I hit the windows key.

A: Important notice about WinKey Disabler and DirectX! If you are running a full screen app which uses DirectX 7.0, the WinKey functions will not work! We are currently working on a solution, and will post it here as soon as it becomes available. This does not affect apps which are not run in full screen.

Q: How much does WinKey cost?

A: WinKey Disabler costs $25USD, and can be purchased and downloaded online through our secure server.

Q: I have a network of 20 computers and would like to use WinKey on all of them, do I have to buy a full version for every computer?

A: NO. We offer flexible site licenses which can be purchased online. Just click on the "Buy Now" link from our web page, and follow the instructions for entering your information. It's easy, and we E-mail the software right to you!
